This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for August 04, 2007:
i want to start off the school year with enough beginners' mind to keep me eager and excited and purposeful.
i want to honor my students' questions with sincerity and respect.
i want to brainstorm a fresh writing topics bank with them. we do this every year. i'll post last year's soon.
i want to keep writing poetry. reading it, too.
i want to keep laughing at my friends' blogs and at their antics late at night under the shine of the moon.
i want to keep taking pictures. i've decided i probably need to use my editing software a little less.
i want to scrub down my deck so that its pale gray wooden boards glow softly.
i want to drink less caffeine.
i want to spend some time with my sister in law and niece and nephew when they come down to georgia from connecticut on the 22nd.
i want to practice trust more deeply.
i haven't turned on the television since wimbledon. i think i want to keep this up. maybe a limited hunk of time here and there with bobby flay's sweet smile or a rerun of the gilmore girls for old times' sake or an episode of georgia backroads or nature. but there has been less mental clutter without television, and i credit zaadz in part.
i want to continue seeing the sweetness and beauty in rust and in the way wooden beams work together to form their own geometry as part of a bridge.
and i want to practice being as fully present as possible to my life and what it shows me.

What a cool teacher!! :)
Love the graphic.
thanks. i took that at a waldorf school in akron, ohio week before last. there are other pics from my visit to that school with my photos here. great colors and images there.
Your list is grand, and we could all do well to find a way to do the same..and this place has filled so many needs for me as well:
Friendship
Sharing
Creating
Laughing
Learning
No TV
Blogging and commenting
and mostly loving all the people and ideas and inspiration that come from posts like this!
thanks for your part Laura!
You are indeed one beautiful soul!
love, Aley
Melody goes to a Waldorf school. I am envious of her; the education she has received there is superlative. It gives me hope for education in general, if but a tiny slice of hope.
Best of luck with fulfilling your goals, Laura!

I gave up T.V. back in December of 2000. (just after that whole “dangling chads” mess). Now, I find it hard even to sit down to watch a DVD. There's so much real living to do. I don't miss it at all. Great goals. I think it's very healthy to set personal goals at the beginning of the school year. So much of a teacher's energy is geared outwards. Writing these down helps keep you in the picture too.
Yes. when my mom passed away, ironically, she left me with a big house with four large televisions in it. I've been thinking a lot lately about what I can do without. : ) and yes, reflecting on teaching goals in writing is really important. did you say you used to be a teacher?
Yes, I was a teacher. I wasn't referring so much to teaching goals, as to personal ones. You seem to have this much better figured out that I did. I started writing down personal / spiritual goals in the fall before I burned out. Until then, the total focus was on two things only - school and my own children. I lost myself. Really and truly. And, didn't realize it until I ended up in the hospital. I think student teachers should receive instruction in creating balance for themselves. I was one of those teachers who couldn't say, “no.” I admire your focus and healthy attitude.
